STRATHMORE — Sunnyside Union Elementary students have been celebrating Character Counts all week.

Character Counts is a popular nationwide program with six pillars of character, for character development.

The fun included dressing up each day of the week; wearing purple on Monday, crazy socks Tuesday, green on Wednesday, pink on Thursday and wearing orange today, to demonstrate the character counts of good citizenship, respect, responsibility, caring and fairness, respectively.

The fun will continue next week with Red Ribbon Week.

On Monday, students will “Dream big and forget drugs” by dressing in pajamas. Tuesday is a dress-for-success and future career day; Wednesday, crazy hair day to demonstrate being crazy over being drug free; Thursday is twin day, symbolizing friends don’t let friends do drugs; and on Friday, Oct. 31, they will dress in costumes or sports to show drugs don’t scare them.

In addition to dressing up, the students have participated in a door-decorating contest, had an assembly, participated in lunchtime activities, and earned prizes.

At Thursday’s assembly, four teachers — Pam Hulse, Pat Manning, Angie Shimer and Theresa Armas — agreed to cut off their hair for cancer patients.

Ribbon-cutting ceremony is Tuesday

The long-anticipated Strathmore High School swimming pool is ready. After years of waiting, the pool has been completed and was being filled with water, reported John Snavely, superintendent of the Porterville Unified School District, when the governing board of trustees met Thursday.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Snavely said.

The meeting began with reports on Granite Hills High School and Harmony Magnet Academy.

Nate Nelson, assistant superintendent of human resources and director of technology, reported the district needs an additional 3,769 iPads to achieve one-to-one internet access at all sites, which translates to $1,884,500 in total expenditures.

Also during the meeting, a public hearing on an energy services agreement with A-C Electric Company was not challenged by anyone and the hearing opened and closed. The contract was awarded to A-C Electric of Visalia for solar installations.

PictureStrathmore High's Taylor Alkire spikes as Lindsay High's Alcocer attempts to block it Monday, Oct. 20, 2014 at Strathmore.
Strathmore High School’s varsity volleyball team got back on track sweeping rival Lindsay 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-20) in a packed home gym on Monday.

The Spartans dominated the first two sets, pushed on by chants from their home crowd. The Cardinals made the third set much more competitive in an effort to avoid getting swept, and took a 20-18 lead late in the game. However, the Spartans dialed in, and senior Josie Lopez made some great plays at the net to give her team the lead and the momentum.

Strathmore was able to fight back and go on a 6-0 run, taking the third set 25-20 and finishing the 3-0 sweep.

With the win, Strathmore advances to 4-1 in the East Sequoia League (ESL) and is preparing for a pivotal match against with league-leading Woodlake.

“We are a totally different team than what we were when we played these guys before,” said Strathmore Coach Mary Lybarger. “We really came together and the girls have started to become a family. We’re going far.”

Josie Lopez led the Spartans, posting 11 kills, five digs, two blocks and an ace on the service line. Teammates Vanessa Lopez, Kristen Gomez, Ashlyn Della and Isabella Galang also contributed one ace each on the night. Also for the Spartans, Vanessa Lopez had 16 digs and 10 kills, co-captain Callie Albison had 13 digs and six kills, Taylor Alkire tallied up 16 digs and two kills, Caitlin Albison contributed two aces, one kill and one dig; and Kandyce Gurrola came up with 35 digs.

With the loss, the Cardinals slip to 3-2 in the ESL.

“I thought we were prepared, but we just didn’t come in ready,” said Lindsay Coach Frankie Arguelles. “I told the team, that’s on me. I have to a better job as a coach, and a better job of preparing these girls to compete down the stretch.”

Adriana Gutierrez led the Cardinals with 10 digs, four kills and one block. Sayla Arguelles added six digs, three kills and an ace. Also for the Cardinals, Kayla Camargo contributed seven assists and Carina Morales posted 12 digs.

The Strathmore High School football team took one on the chin Friday, falling 56-14 to visiting Sierra Pacific of Hanford.

“They dominated the whole game,” a disappointed Spartan Coach Jeromy Blackwell said. “They controlled the line of scrimmage.”

Strathmore managed several scoring drives, and junior running back Javier Moreno scored on a 6-yard run for the Spartans, who trailed 21-7 after one quarter.

The Golden Bears dominated throughout, improving to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the East Sequoia League. Strathmore slipped to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Blackwell took the blame for the loss. “I didn’t have them prepared,” he said.

The Spartans will try again Friday when they travel to Corcoran to take on the Panthers, who are 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the ESL.

Strathmore High School junior running back Javier Moreno had another big night Friday — 87 yards rushing and three touchdowns in front of a large home crowd.

But it wasn’t enough to overcome a bigger Woodlake squad, which won 42-27 after capitalizing on four Strathmore turnovers.

Coach Jeromy Blackwell’s Spartans took an early lead when Moreno took the opening kickoff to the house on an 85-yard touchdown run.

But Woodlake answered with three straight scores to lead 21-7 at the half.

Moreno added touchdown runs of 1 yard and 7 yards before the night was over. Strathmore senior running back Eduardo Castro scored on a one-yard run, and added a two-point conversion.

Junior quarterback Carlos Lopez completed 8 of 22 passes for 92 yards for Strathmore.

Strathmore slipped to 3-3 with the loss while Woodlake improved to 2-3 in a mutual East Sequoia League opener.

The Spartans host Sierra Pacific High School Friday. Kickoff is at 7:15 p.m.

BY TRENTON LIVELY tlively@portervillerecorder.com

Strathmore’s varsity volleyball team beat Monache 3-0 at home on Thursday, making the Marauders the second straight East Yosemite League team to fall at the hands of the Spartans.

Even though the score doesn’t reflect it, this was a closely contested match from beginning to end. The Marauders had a distinct height advantage and a starting front row of players that on paper were the easy favorites to win, but the Spartans were not intimidated and they showed it with their play.

Strathmore jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first set, but let off the gas and let Moncahe get back in. The Spartans would go on to win the first set 25-22. The second set was a back and forth battle with neither team being able to grab much momentum to go on a long run. Strathmore’s front row stepped up and made some good plays to tie the set at 22 -22. They went on a run and had the advantage heading into the set point, and were able to come up with the perfect dig, set and kill play assisted by Kandyce Gurrola and finished by Vanessa Lopez to take the set 25-23.

Monache tried to get in the game in the third set,but the determined Spartans refused to let any kind of runs get going. Brookyn Beavers had a big block to tie the set 17-17, and the Marauders went ahead by three 20-17. However, in the end it was not enough and the Spartans never gave up fighting back to tie the set at 20-20 and ended up winning the third on an ace by Kristen Gomez completing the sweep.

“I think we played okay, but we didn’t bring the energy,” said Monache Head Coach Kyle Newlin.

For Strathmore Lopez had 15 digs, 13 kills, three blocks and three aces. Teammates Callie Albison contributed 21 digs, seven kills, four aces and two blocks, Josie Lopez contributed 14 digs, 12 kills, five blocks and two aces, and Gomez contributed 10 digs, eight kills and the ace that won the game.

“I’m very proud of them, I had nothing to say to my team in the locker room,” said Strathmore Head Coach Mary Lybarger. “Although this victory is kind of bitter sweet, because it’s against my alma mater.”

Both Strathmore and Monache will have to prepare for league play, and the Marauders next match will be against defending EYL champions Tulare Union.
