Strathmore’s varsity boys basketball team lost 50-43 at home against Yosemite High on Friday.

The Spartans kept it close and even had a lead at different points throughout the game, but the Badgers led at the end of each quarter, including the one that matters most.

Both teams came out with in a full-court press, and the game turned into a fast-break affair, with both teams taking quick shots on offense and looking to draw fouls.

Strathmore Head Coach Justin St. Clair took all of his starters out in the second quarter, and the second team was able to close the gap.

As the third quarter neared the end Strathmore was able to push ahead by five points. However, the Badgers closed the gap and Alex Williams hit a trey to give his team a 35-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The game was a defensive battle, with both teams turning the ball over many times, but the difference was Badgers’ post play on offense and defense down the stretch.

Yosemite center Kade Cross had some big blocks in the paint, as well as some timely offensive boards.

Spartan point guard Carlos Lopez received a technical foul with seconds left in the game, and the Badgers were able to make some clutch free throws to go home with the win.

“I thought defensively we were pretty good today. When you hold a team under 50 points you should be able to win the game. We just struggled in spots offensively where we just can’t get things going,” St. Clair said. “We have to be able to attack the basket and finish our shots.”

Shooting guard Junior Cisneros led the Spartans with 13 points.

The Lady Spartans varsity basketball team had a chance to clean house at their own George Glover Memorial Strathmore Tournament on Friday night.

Unfortunately the Lady Monarchs of Exeter High had plans of their own. Exeter dominated Porterville 44-11 in their tourney opener, and dismantled Washington Union 58 - 22 in their second game.

The championship game would also end with the Lady Monarchs on top 43-18, getting the first place finish in the tournament.

Strathmore struggled to get their offense going for the entire first half of the game, and were held to just eight points. Defensively the Lady Spartans could not stop Exeter’s sophomore center, Olivia Harden, who equaled Strathmore’s point total on her own, with eight points in the first half.

Strathmore sophomore captain Maria Hernandez, tried to carry her team on offense in the second, dribbling the ball coast to coast and drawing fouls. Only problem was, that Hernandez was unable to capitalize at the foul line, making five of 18 of her foul shots on the night.

The Lady Spartans were able to find some success on defense in the third quarter of the game, with Strathmore Coach Richard Miranda decided to play a 2-3 zone instead of man-to-man. The zone caused some problems for Exeter, and Strathmore held the Lady Monarchs to just one point in the third, however, the Lady Spartans were only able to get three points on offense, and could not penetrate Exeter’s defense.

“I think they just wanted it more,” Miranda said. “Our girls just didn’t play with enough heart tonight.”

Exeters Coach Gary Hylton decided to put his starters back in at the start of the fourth, and the Lady Monarchs went on a 17-3 run to end the game and grab the first place trophy.

Kathy Rodriguez and Hernandez were the only Lady Spartans to score field goals in the game. Hernandez ended her night with seven points, and Rodriguez contributed four.

Strathmore advanced to the finals with a 52-24 win over Paramount Thursday.

Sophomore Mariah Hernandez paced the Lady Spartans with 16 points and nine steals. Senior Kandyce Gurrola added 15 points, while sophomore Kathy Rodriquez grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

The Lady Spartans of Strathmore High School continue to take down the East Yosemite League competition, pulling out a hard fought 2-1 victory in their match on Tuesday over a good Tulare Union team.

Mud puddles were spread throughout the pitch due to Monday’s rain and they definitely affected the play on the field. Several times during the match, the ball would stop dead in it’s tracks on a critical passes for both sides.

It would be Strathmore’s Caitlin Albison who scored first, off a beautiful cross by Yajaira Quezada to give the Lady Spartans the lead. Kacie Silveira of Tulare Union kicked a strike on goal late in the first half to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the second half.

In the early stages of the second half, the game was played in the center of the field, with both teams deciding to keep the ball in the air on 50-50 volleys, with neither squad gaining a clear advantage.

Samantha Olivera would break up the stalemate, scoring a big goal to give the Lady Spartans a 2-1 lead with 21 minutes left in the game. Tulare answered by pressing harder and playing with a high intensity level as they tried to even the score once again. Strathmore goalie Judith Uribe had a great save on a Tulare Union corner kick to prevent the Lady Redskins from getting back in the game.

Mid-fielder Taylor Alkire was able to draw a penalty inside Tulare Union’s 18 foot penalty box, but Kristen Gomez was unable to capitalize on the opportunity, missing the penalty kick that would’ve given Strathmore a two goal lead.

Fortunately for Strathmore, they were able to keep the ball on Tulare Union’s half of the pitch late in the second and hold on to get the win over another quality opponent.

“The difference is the determination to win tonight,” Strathmore Coach Hector Gonzalez said. “That’s a pretty good team they’ve got there. [Tulare Union] was able to cover us in the middle, but an ugly win like this, you still take it.”

SCORE BY HALVES:

SHS :   1 1 - 2

TUHS : 1 0 - 1

Goals: Strathmore - Caitlin Albison, 1; Samantha Olivera, 1

Assists: Strathmore -Yajaira Quezada , 1;

Lady Spartans Come Out Flying. . .

12/8/2014

Usually when a varsity team has eight sophomores playing, it’s assumed that the team is going through a “rebuilding year.” Not the case for Strathmore’s varsity girls soccer team.

With a career record of 147-42-12, Lady Spartans Head Coach Hector Gonzalez has built a dynasty in the East Sequoia League (ESL), with his latest victory coming against Division II Monache.

The Lady Spartans beat the Lady Marauders 2-1 on Thursday, improving their record to 2-0 on the year.

It was Monache that would draw first blood on the pitch, with freshmen Isabel Mendez scoring a goal thanks to a great assist from her teammate Tatiana Verduzco. The Lady Marauders’ defense was able to shut down Strathmore in the first half of the game, taking control of the middle pitch and playing smart on their back line.

However, the Lady Spartans came out flying in the second half and began to control possession and bring the game to Monache’s half of the field. Sophomore Samantha Oliveira scored the first goal for Strathmore, to even things up at 1-1 early on. Monache tried to answer with a few counter attacks, but it was clear that the momentum pendulum was swinging in Strathmore’s favor. Sophomore co-captain Ally Halloway provided the finishing touches, scoring on a long range strike that found the back of the net.

“We’re such a young team this year, and this is only our third week together as a team. The ability of this group and their willingness to play hard is (something special) that’s going to take us to the next level,” said Gonzalez.
