The Spartans dominated the first two sets, pushed on by chants from their home crowd. The Cardinals made the third set much more competitive in an effort to avoid getting swept, and took a 20-18 lead late in the game. However, the Spartans dialed in, and senior Josie Lopez made some great plays at the net to give her team the lead and the momentum.
Strathmore was able to fight back and go on a 6-0 run, taking the third set 25-20 and finishing the 3-0 sweep.
With the win, Strathmore advances to 4-1 in the East Sequoia League (ESL) and is preparing for a pivotal match against with league-leading Woodlake.
“We are a totally different team than what we were when we played these guys before,” said Strathmore Coach Mary Lybarger. “We really came together and the girls have started to become a family. We’re going far.”
Josie Lopez led the Spartans, posting 11 kills, five digs, two blocks and an ace on the service line. Teammates Vanessa Lopez, Kristen Gomez, Ashlyn Della and Isabella Galang also contributed one ace each on the night. Also for the Spartans, Vanessa Lopez had 16 digs and 10 kills, co-captain Callie Albison had 13 digs and six kills, Taylor Alkire tallied up 16 digs and two kills, Caitlin Albison contributed two aces, one kill and one dig; and Kandyce Gurrola came up with 35 digs.
With the loss, the Cardinals slip to 3-2 in the ESL.
“I thought we were prepared, but we just didn’t come in ready,” said Lindsay Coach Frankie Arguelles. “I told the team, that’s on me. I have to a better job as a coach, and a better job of preparing these girls to compete down the stretch.”
Adriana Gutierrez led the Cardinals with 10 digs, four kills and one block. Sayla Arguelles added six digs, three kills and an ace. Also for the Cardinals, Kayla Camargo contributed seven assists and Carina Morales posted 12 digs.
