A permit to build a new $900,000 Dollar General store in Strathmore has been approved and county officials said they expect the company to begin construction this fall.
Dollar General, the largest of the dollar store chains, is planning a 9,100-square-foot store on Avenue 196, just east of Strathmore High School. The company is looking to build on a vacant lot on the south side of Avenue 196 about 500 yards west of Orange Belt Drive.
Dollar General has been very aggressive in its expansion plans and is working to acquire Family Dollar, a company that just opened a store in the Vallarata Shopping Center on Plano Street in Porterville. Family Dollar has a store on West Olive Avenue in the Town and Country Shopping Center.
Mike Washam, Tulare County Economic Development manager, said the only thing delaying the start of construction is the company needs to finalize a parcel map for the project.
Washam said the company has told him its stores in small rural communities like Strathmore have been very successful. The company, which has been around for 75 years, has 12,000 stores nationwide.
“Sales have beat all their expectations since opening in these markets,” said Washam of the company’s venture into Tulare County. “I was told the top-performing stores in the whole country are in the southern Central Valley,” he added.
While the county will see some revenue from the store, Washam said more important is the store will provide much more for the community.
“It creates some jobs for the local community, as well as provide some services,” he said. “People won’t have to drive as far for items,” he added.
Washam said he expected construction to take three or four months.
