The Strathmore High School girls’ soccer team celebrated on Sunday when the brackets for the state playoffs were released. The Lady Spartans earned the top seed in Division IV in the Southern California region.
“A milestone came our way,” said Lady Spartan coach Hector Gonzalez. “Strathmore High School is seeded No. 1 in the State Tournament.”
Next, the Lady Spartans, who have a 21-2-1 record with 15 straight wins, hope to celebrate a regional title, and a berth in the state championship game.
Their first test comes today, when Strathmore hosts eighth-seeded St. Genevieve High School at 4 p.m. Admission is $9 for adults, and $5 for students and senior citizens.
St. Genevieve is a school from Panorama City in Los Angeles County. The Lady Valiants sport a 17-3-2 record, and finished second in the CIF Southern Section tournament and second in the Camino Real League.
Strathmore earned the top seed by playing and beating a contingent of larger schools in the early season, and by cruising to a Valley title with a trio of lopsided wins.
The Lady Spartans topped Kingsburg 6-3 in the quarterfinals, Taft 6-1 in the semifinals, and Bakersfield Christian 5-1 in the finals.
Strathmore features a potent offense, led by super sophomore forwards Samantha Oliveira and Taylor Alkire.
They each scored six goals and logged two assists in the Lady Spartans’ three playoff games. Oliveira leads the team in scoring this season with 38 goals. Alkire has meshed 21 goals to go with 11 assists.
Junior Captain Rosalinda Platas provides leadership for the Lady Spartans, and some offensive punch. She booted 15 goals this season.
Strathmore is also tough on defense, yielding one goal or fewer in 17 contests this year. Senior goalie Judith Uribe has recorded six shutouts.
The top seed will allow Strathmore to play at home on familiar turf throughout the playoffs, as long as they keep winning. The semi-final round is set for 4 p.m. Thursday, while the SoCal Championships will be played at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
