Mud puddles were spread throughout the pitch due to Monday’s rain and they definitely affected the play on the field. Several times during the match, the ball would stop dead in it’s tracks on a critical passes for both sides.
It would be Strathmore’s Caitlin Albison who scored first, off a beautiful cross by Yajaira Quezada to give the Lady Spartans the lead. Kacie Silveira of Tulare Union kicked a strike on goal late in the first half to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the second half.
In the early stages of the second half, the game was played in the center of the field, with both teams deciding to keep the ball in the air on 50-50 volleys, with neither squad gaining a clear advantage.
Samantha Olivera would break up the stalemate, scoring a big goal to give the Lady Spartans a 2-1 lead with 21 minutes left in the game. Tulare answered by pressing harder and playing with a high intensity level as they tried to even the score once again. Strathmore goalie Judith Uribe had a great save on a Tulare Union corner kick to prevent the Lady Redskins from getting back in the game.
Mid-fielder Taylor Alkire was able to draw a penalty inside Tulare Union’s 18 foot penalty box, but Kristen Gomez was unable to capitalize on the opportunity, missing the penalty kick that would’ve given Strathmore a two goal lead.
Fortunately for Strathmore, they were able to keep the ball on Tulare Union’s half of the pitch late in the second and hold on to get the win over another quality opponent.
“The difference is the determination to win tonight,” Strathmore Coach Hector Gonzalez said. “That’s a pretty good team they’ve got there. [Tulare Union] was able to cover us in the middle, but an ugly win like this, you still take it.”
