Strathmore High’s baseball team started out strong Thursday evening with a big first inning that catapulted them over Granite Hills 11-2.
After Strathmore’s Clay Landis put the Spartans on the board by stealing home, senior Michael Merzoian hit a two RBI single in the first. Merzoian went 3-4 at the plate, adding an RBI single in the second as well as a double in the fifth.
SHS coach Thad Reece spoke highly of his team as he felt they played the best they had all season long. “We got off to a really good start and we haven’t had that in a long time,” said Reece. “To get up four runs in the first inning, it was hard for them to come back.”
Granite was able to secure a run in the second when sophomore Calvin Duran hit an RBI double to bring Derek Steidley home.Duran was then able to score for GHS in the sixth.
The Grizzlies performed defensively as they shut down Strathmore in both the third and fourth innings when they kept the Spartans from getting on base. However, the Spartans’ early lead allowed for a boost in confidence which allowed them to outplay Granite.
Brandon Delk added three RBIs for the Spartans and was consistent while playing defens at shortstop.
Reece added, “Delk played a really solid game defensively and he had three RBIs that were quiet. The team really put together a solid game against a rival in the sense that we play in the same community.”
