On a day when temperatures dipped into the 20s, Strathmore came out cold in the second half. The Lady Spartans managed just six points after the break — all in the third quarter — to fall 36-29 to Hanford West in their final game at the Tulare Mid-Winter Classic.
Strathmore led 23-14 at the half, thanks to the three-point shooting of team captain Kandyce Gurrola, who had 13 points in the first two quarters.
The Lady Spartans came out in the second half and were held to just six points. They were scoreless in the fourth.
Hanford West played a soft man-to-man defense that caused Strathmore to turn the ball over 23 times, with most of the miscues coming in the second half.
Strathmore Head Coach Richard Miranda said that he was forced to rely on his inexperienced bench players throughout the tournament. As for his starters, Miranda said, “I realize we’re a young team, but several of these girls played games in the summer. It’s time to step it up and start playing like we want to win games.”
Gurrola led Strathmore with 15 points. With the loss, Strathmore slipped to 7-7. The Lady Spartans will travel to Bishop Jan. 7, and host Tulare Union on Jan. 9 before starting East Sequoia League play.
