Strathmore High School junior running back Javier Moreno had another big night Friday — 87 yards rushing and three touchdowns in front of a large home crowd.
But it wasn’t enough to overcome a bigger Woodlake squad, which won 42-27 after capitalizing on four Strathmore turnovers.
Coach Jeromy Blackwell’s Spartans took an early lead when Moreno took the opening kickoff to the house on an 85-yard touchdown run.
But Woodlake answered with three straight scores to lead 21-7 at the half.
Moreno added touchdown runs of 1 yard and 7 yards before the night was over. Strathmore senior running back Eduardo Castro scored on a one-yard run, and added a two-point conversion.
Junior quarterback Carlos Lopez completed 8 of 22 passes for 92 yards for Strathmore.
Strathmore slipped to 3-3 with the loss while Woodlake improved to 2-3 in a mutual East Sequoia League opener.
The Spartans host Sierra Pacific High School Friday. Kickoff is at 7:15 p.m.
